EVSU joins REC-SWM Summit

REC-SWM SummitEVSU participates in the 3rd Eastern Visayas Regional Ecology Center Solid Waste Management (REC-SWM) Summit at the Department of Public Works and Highways Multipurpose Hall on November 18-19, 2009.

 

Upon invitation by the REC, the EVSU Chorale rendered the doxology and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem during the opening ceremony of the said event. EVSU Habaynon Dance Troupe also exhibited their talents as they presented an intermission number.

 

Mr. Faustito Aure and selected EVSU Architecture students assisted in the production design, preparatory activities and facilitation of the Fashion Show during the Dinner Show Cum Fellowship Night which was the final activity of the first day of the event.

The two-day event was composed of presentations anchored on the theme “Sustaining Waste Reduction Initiatives through Recycling, Education and Composting: Our Regional Action to Climate Change Mitigation.”

Ms. Purificacion S. Daloos, Chief, RPAO, Department of Environment and Natural Resources started the first day of the seminar with the discussion of R.A. 9512: Environmental Education and Awareness Act of 2008. Social Marketing Strategies in Engaging Public Support for SWM featuring the landslide catastrophe in Guinsaugon, St. Bernard, S. Leyte followed as discussed by Ms. Maribel B. Munsayac, EMB-8 with St. Bernard Mayor Hon. Rico C. Rentuza.

In the afternoon, Hon. Rustico Balderian, Tabon-tabon Municipality Mayor shared about Materials Recovery and Recycling stressing the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) practice of Tabon-tabon.
Awarding of recognition to winners of the 1st EV Regional Search for Model Local Government Units (LGU) in SWM 2009 was presented during the fellowship night. Calbayog City, Samar clutched the 1st place followed by Guiuan , E Samar (2nd) and Maydolong, E. Samar (3rd).

Ms. Elvira A. Martija, EVSU faculty and a REC member delivered a recapitulation of Day 1 session of the Summit to prepare the participants for the second day activities.

Biodegradables management and composting including the step-by-step guide to establishing sanitary landfills and financing SWM was tackled during the second day. Climate change video presentation was also presented.
