Typhoon Basyang wrecks lives, properties

Basyang (international name Conson) the first typhoon that hit the Philippine archipelago this season left trails of massive death and damaged properties.

Bearing maximum sustained winds of 120 km per hour, Basyang ravaged Luzon areas; Bataan and Zambales (Region III); Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Quezon (Region IV); and Camarines Sur, Catanduanes (Region V).

The Destruction
There were 111 people who died, some of them were fishermen who were on their boats during the time of sailing. The total number of families affected was 53,500 and 31,542 houses were damaged and totally destroyed.

Other after effects include the electricity knock out, down communication systems, railway system shutdown due to the power outage, destruction of infrastructures and agriculture. The total cost of damage to infrastructure reached P 138.57 million and in agriculture, P 239.41 million. 1300 hectares of rice were completely damaged, 87 hectares of corn vanished and 690 hectares of assorted vegetables and fruits were displaced.

The immediate response
After the unpleasant discourse of typhoon, medical services were given by the government. Mobilized volunteers were sent for search and rescue operations, relief items were distributed to the people of hit areas. Authorities make sure that there would be enough evacuation centers and immediate treatment of the injured.

And according to PAGASA, the entire archipelago will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming widespread over Palawan and Western Visayas. And people located in Tacloban City will experience mostly cloudy skies with rainshowers.
