Abstract
The patriarchal structure imposes rigidity on human relationships by compelling the dominating gender (wife) to act as an unwitting participant in advancing her subjectivity. This subjectivity forces the marginalized gender to have a smaller public sphere and less societal privileges, resulting in a more socially vulnerable position in society. The study focuses on the examination of micro-scale power dynamics in gender relations in Edilberto K. Tiempo's To Be Free. Gender relations are the intimate relationships between a husband, who is the dominating gender, and his wife, who is the dominated gender. Social forces have an effect on the communication repertoire between husband and wife. As a result, socially constructed meanings are implicitly accepted within a patriarchal structure.
