Abstract

The United Nations and other foreign non-governmental organizations contributed cash and implemented recovery projects in Tacloban City following Typhoon Yolanda. The municipal authority must assume responsibility for the city's cleanliness through efficient garbage disposal and segregation. A possible alternative is to process recyclable materials, as this not only mitigates health risks and keeps the environment clean, but also generates cash, compensating for the cost of collection and delivery. A garbage disposal/segregation repository must be established at critical areas around the city as a support mechanism. The barangay council should adopt a more comprehensive and stringent ordinance requiring the adoption of an ecological and sustainable solid waste management system.
