Along with the first, second, and third launches of the Haiyan Conversations, the Eastern Visayas State University through the Office of Research & Development and Extension Services successfully launch its fourth episode online thru Zoom and Facebook live for worldwide viewers. The fourth episode, titled “Narrative from Haiyan: A Continuing Struggle for Words,” was held on the usual 8th day of the month, February 2022.
The episode’s main conversant was Prof. Dinah Roma, a university fellow and professor of Literature and Creative Writing at De La Salle University-Manila and a multi-awardee author on books of poetry, and essay. Her books of poetry include: A Feast of Origins (2004 UST), Geographies of Light (UST 2011), Naming the Ruins (Vagabond Sydney 2014), and We Shall Write Love Poems Again (UST 2021) and her book of essay include Weaving Basey: A Poet’s History of Home, awarded by the National Book Development Trust Fund Writing Grant for local history and culture, and will be released in the Ateneo de Naga Publishing House soon.
One of Prof. Roma’s lingering passages in her talk, “We need to look into every aspect of the Haiyan phenomenon from its atmospheric dynamic to the way it behaved on land and how it devastated the places it hit along its way so that we could learn as much from it and hopefully equip ourselves logistically for another typhoon or calamity…… writing releases us from the prison of our thoughts”, that indeed, linked poetry and science.
The talk was as well participated by Prof. Joycie Dorado Alegre. She is an associate professor in the Humanities at the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College and is the President of the Leyte-Samar Heritage Society, Inc. She served as Editor of the book Haiyan- Voices and Images published in 2015 by the (NCCA) National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Leyte-Samar Heritage Society, Inc. She is the author of Ethnopoetics of Resilience: Haiyan/Ground Zero Philippines, an article published in the book Heritage, temporality and materiality co-produced in 2015 by the University of Naples Federico II, Italy and the University of the Philippines Diliman. The conjecture of the discussion paved way on equipping ourselves logistically for another typhoon or calamity in the near future and still, putting in our creatives mind in between.
