The Elementary Education Department, College of Education of Eastern Visayas State University, through its Department Head, Dr. Bryan H. Gervacio, signed a Memorandum of Agreement with its partner school, Colawen Elementary School, May 24 at 9:00 am, Pastrana, Leyte.
Also present in the said Memorandum of Agreement Signing were Mr. Joel Ranis, District Supervisor of Pastrana District; Ms. Haydee C. Cayaco, Head Teacher of Colawen Elementary School, Prof. Shirley Siozon, the Extension Coordinator of the College of Education, Hon. Suzieta Omoy, Brgy.Captain of Brgy.Colawen, Pastrana,Leyte and the faculty members of the EED and SLS Department.
The faculty members of the Elementary Education Department and the Secondary Laboratory School initiated an orientation activity among the participants to establish rapport and set expectations on the scope and deliverables of the Reading Program while Prof. Jessica Pagallaman, EED Extension Coordinator, gave a lead of the activity by sharing the statement of purpose.
The partner school, Colawen Elementary School, has adopted the Project K.U.B.O (Kapit-bisig ngayong pandemya Upang Bawat Bata Bumasa Obligado lahat tayo) of the Pastrana District from its proponent, Ms. Chona T. Letrodo, Grade 1 Teacher of Pastrana Central School.
“Project KUBO is an off-shoot to the district’s initiative to address the gaps in reading, to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders and to foster the love for reading among struggling learners,” said Mr. Joel Ranis.
In his speech, he further mentioned “It is said that the battle for quality education should be won and fought by the teachers in school. We have a lot of challenges in Dep Ed. To win the battle, we need collaborators. Hence, I am thankful that EVSU has chosen Pastrana District, particularly Colawen Elementary School, as its extension site”.
Ms. Haydee C. Cayaco, the Head Teacher of Colawen Elementary School, was grateful to the EVSU Team for choosing their school as its extension program beneficiary.
“We are looking forward for a productive partnership and the expansion of the project”, she said.
Dr. Bryan H. Gervacio, Head of the EED-COED Department, expressed his appreciation to the school management and the District of Pastrana for allowing the university to be its partner in honing the hope of the country.
Quoting the saying of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, “Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan”, Dr. Gervacio emphasized the role of the youth in nation building.
Stipulated in the signed Memorandum of Agreement is the establishment of formal working relationship between Eastern Visayas State University and Colawen Elementary School in training the 38 volunteer Project KUBO teachers on the different pedagogies of teaching reading and crafting resource materials to be used in teaching reading to struggling learners.
The Local Government Unit of Pastrana, through Hon. Maritess C. Marcos, Pastrana Municipal Mayor, hired the ten of the volunteer Project KUBO teachers to augment the teaching force to handle the reading program while Dep Ed Pastrana District tapped the other twenty-eight volunteers.
Twenty-five struggling readers of the said school joined the fun-filled reading activities spearheaded by the faculty members of the Elementary Education Department and the Secondary Laboratory School with the support of Dr. Grace N. Camasin, SLS Principal.
Prof. Mary Jessica T. Alalid served as the story reader while other faculty members sustained the interest of the kids through games and reading interest inventory.
Candies, and educational supplies, among others, aroused the excitement of the recipients as Ms. Lyra Escarlan, the program host, Prof. Liezel Fabrigaras, Prof. Jessica Pagallaman, Prof. Mary Grace Sarsalejo, Prof. Veniza An Galaroza,Prof. Eliditha Easter Gervacio, Prof. Gemma Briva, Prof. Marilou T.Avendaño, Prof. Rexon Jay Balo,Prof. Decster Abanel, Prof. Wit Excelsior Paña and Prof. Ma. Lorna Mercado led the exciting games while the University Multimedia and Development Center Team led by Dr. Leancel M. Homeres,Director of UMDC documented the event.
The closing remarks of Prof. Shirley Siozon, COED Extension Coordinator and a photo opportunity with the participants wrapped up the activity.
