Abstract
This study aims to gather data and address inquiries on the ESL learners’ ownership of mobile devices, frequency and preferences among mobile device features, prior listening and speaking activities using mobile devices experienced in the classroom, as well as their suggested listening and speaking mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) tasks in a speech communication classroom. This mixed methods study was conducted to nineteen (19) 3rd year English majors of the Leyte Normal University in Tacloban City, Philippines. After their consent to participating in the study, a survey questionnaire was administered, followed by a focus group discussion. Frequency distribution, and percentage were used for the questionnaire, while Colaizzi’s method of data analysis was used in the open-ended questionnaire and focus group discussion. Findings revealed that most ESL learners had a mobile device with internet connection and most frequently used text message, dictionary, chat in text, music player, and web browser as features in their devices. They had previously experienced listening to music, listening to pronunciation, and watching drama/ videos in their classes, among others. In terms of speaking activities, they had made casual phone calls in the classroom. The study also generated the following themes: “Listening to Natives; Listen All You Can; Calls, Calls, Calls; Simulation Education: Pronunciation Practice, Simulated Speech, and VR (Virtual Reality) Venture.” The researcher recommends that ESL learners and teachers collaborate to develop and incorporate more listening and speaking mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) in the speech communication classroom.
