Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) once again demonstrated its commitment to community service as it opened its doors to residents affected by Typhoon Opong. A total of 176 individuals sought shelter at the ABS-CBN Building inside EVSU’s Main Campus during the height of the typhoon last September 25, 2025.
The evacuees, composed of families from nearby barangay, were assisted by EVSU security personnel and campus staff headed by The University’s Head of Security, Mr. Jerry Ochea and campus staff. The university ensured that the building was safe and equipped to accommodate the displaced individuals until the weather improved.
Personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) also arrived on campus to conduct an initial assessment of the evacuees’ needs, including food, water, and psychosocial support. Coordination between EVSU, DSWD, and local government units helped ensure the orderly management of the evacuation site.
The evacuees remained temporarily housed at the campus facility until the following morning, when authorities confirmed that it was safe for them to return home.
University officials reaffirmed their commitment to providing safe refuge during emergencies.
EVSU continues to work closely with local authorities to monitor post-typhoon conditions and provide necessary support to affected families.
