News Flying fox population count & habitat monitoring through the collaboration of DENR and EVSU strengthens conservation efforts in Biliran

From August 6 to 8, 2025, EVSU student interns under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program (DENR–CDD-PAMBCS) conducted a focused population count and habitat monitoring of flying foxes in Poblacion, Almeria. This initiative marks the third consecutive year of monitoring, reflecting DENR’s sustained commitment to wildlife conservation and ecological research.

A significant number of flying foxes—fruit bats known for their vital role in pollination and seed dispersal—were observed roosting in trees throughout the area. Locals noted a remarkable increase in population compared to previous years, with the bats now occupying nearby trees and extending into adjacent streets. This growth signals a positive trend in habitat stability and species recovery.

Residents also shared intriguing behavioral observations, such as the tendency of baby flying foxes to separate from adults. This pattern offers valuable insight into the species’ social dynamics and ecological needs, contributing to a deeper understanding of their life cycle and habitat preferences.

However, the activity also revealed challenges. Three dead flying foxes were found during the monitoring, underscoring the need for continuous protection. Community members recalled a past incident during Brigada Eskwela, when dried vegetation burning disrupted the bats’ roosting. Fortunately, DENR’s awareness campaigns have since helped prevent similar disturbances, fostering a more informed and protective local environment.

Despite heavy rains during the monitoring period, the bats remained in their roosting site which demontrates a strong attachment to their habitat and resilience to environmental stressors. This behavior further emphasizes the importance of preserving their natural roosting areas and minimizing human-induced threats.
