Eastern Visayas State University further strengthened its system-wide environmental sustainability efforts through a series of orientations on Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS), conducted by its Pollution Control Office (PCO) across multiple campuses.
The initiative culminated in a session held on April 29 at the Human Resource Development Center (HRDC) Hall of the Burauen Campus. Similar orientations were successfully conducted at the Tanauan, Dulag, Carigara, and Ormoc campuses, ensuring broad participation and consistent implementation across the university system.
This effort aligns with the implementation of Republic Act No. 9003 and reflects EVSU’s commitment to strengthening responsible waste management practices in all its campuses.
The orientation sessions gathered a diverse group of stakeholders, including students, faculty members, Supreme Student Government (SSG) and student organization officers, ground maintenance personnel, laboratory staff, and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) coordinators.
Leading the sessions, PCO Head Prof. Ma. Elvira A. Martija emphasized the importance of environmental compliance and outlined the initiative’s objectives. She also highlighted key policies such as Republic Act No. 9729, Republic Act No. 8749, and Republic Act No. 10121, giving emphasis on their relevance to institutional practices.
Prof. Lilibeth Peliño, MSc, delivered a comprehensive discussion on Republic Act No. 9003, focusing on the classification of solid waste and the core principles of ecological solid waste management.
Meanwhile, Ms. Rosemarie B. Galanza detailed the WACS process, explaining its purpose, phases, sampling procedures, required materials and equipment, and group assignments for implementation.
Each session incorporated participant assessments, hands-on demonstrations, and group presentations to reinforce learning and ensure readiness for actual WACS implementation at the campus level.
Through this multi-campus initiative, EVSU aims to standardize waste assessment practices and build a stronger culture of environmental responsibility throughout its university system.
