Sustainable Literacy at Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU)

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) upholds sustainability as a core educational principle embedded within its academic, research, and extension programs. The University ensures that students across all disciplines acquire and demonstrate sustainability literacy—the knowledge, competencies, and values necessary to contribute to sustainable development and resilient communities.

To evaluate students’ understanding and retention of key sustainability concepts, EVSU integrates sustainability-focused learning outcomes and assessments into its curriculum. Courses in general education, engineering, education, environmental science, and technology include modules on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, environmental ethics, renewable energy, and community resiliency. These are evaluated through graded outputs such as case analyses, project proposals, field studies, and capstone projects that apply sustainability principles to real-world contexts.

The Office of Curriculum and Instruction, in collaboration with the University Curriculum Committee (UCC) under the Academic Affairs Office, regularly reviews course syllabi to ensure alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and EVSU’s Vision of becoming the National University for Resiliency and Climate Action (NURCA). Sustainability competencies—critical thinking, systems analysis, and socio-environmental awareness—are measured through performance-based rubrics and student reflections embedded in outcomes-based education (OBE) assessments.

Beyond classroom instruction, EVSU enhances sustainable literacy through experiential and community-based learning. Programs such as the NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM (NSTP) activities immerse students in sustainability challenges, allowing them to apply theory to practice in collaboration with local government units and NGOs. These activities serve as living laboratories for students to demonstrate comprehension of sustainability issues in agri-fisheries, waste management, and climate adaptation.

Furthermore, EVSU conducts annual sustainability awareness surveys and knowledge evaluations to assess the students’ evolving understanding of sustainable development principles. Results from these surveys inform policy adjustments, curriculum enhancement, and faculty capacity-building initiatives.

Through these structured, interdisciplinary, and evidence-based measures, EVSU ensures that sustainability literacy is not only taught but meaningfully measured, internalized, and demonstrated by its graduates—equipping them to become agents of sustainable transformation in Eastern Visayas and beyond.
