Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) actively pursues partnerships with local, national, and international health institutions to advance its commitment to improving health and well-being outcomes for its students, employees, and the wider community.

At the local level, EVSU collaborates with hospitals such as Divine Word Hospital in implementing the Culinary Excellence and Food Innovation Program in collaboration with healthcare institutions. This initiative focuses on enhancing the culinary skills of healthcare service providers and promoting food innovation in healthcare settings, thereby improving the quality, nutritional value, and appeal of patient meals while strengthening the university’s extension services to better serve local communities.

Nationally, EVSU maintains partnerships with Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Manila, and the University of Perpetual Help System to enhance health and well-being through the integration of academic training and healthcare service delivery. Through its collaboration with Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, EVSU deploys BS in Nutrition and Dietetics students for clinical practicum and community immersion in a supervised environment that develops their competencies in nutrition care, patient management, and health promotion. This partnership bridges classroom learning with real-world experience, strengthening students’ professional skills and reaffirming EVSU’s commitment to advancing public health and community well-being.

On the global stage, EVSU engages in collaborative projects and academic exchanges with international medical universities like Kaohsiung Medical University at Taiwan. This partnership provide opportunities for faculty and students to participate in training, research, and knowledge-sharing, broadening their exposure to innovative health practices and solutions.

Strengthening Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Through Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration

On April 18, 2024, Eastern Visayas State University – Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC) served as the venue for the Carigara Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion, held at the campus mini gymnasium. The initiative, led by Global Care Philippines in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), convened a diverse group of stakeholders united in addressing the growing concern of teenage pregnancy and reproductive health challenges among Filipino youth.

The forum brought together leading advocates and health professionals, including Ms. Lydia Sagong, Branch Manager of Global Care Philippines; Atty. Wenceslao Narido, Municipal Administrator of Carigara; Dr. Mary Grace Tan Uy, Vice President of the Philippine Pediatric Society and National Chair Advocate against Teenage Pregnancy; Coach Marife F. Garfin, Certified Life and Mental Health Coach from Life Coach Philippines – Eastern Visayas; and Mr. Clark Windell D. Averila, Nurse III from the Provincial Health Office.

Representatives from DOH EV-CHD, Mr. Marvin Allen G. Guyjoco and Ms. Roxanne E. Marson, RN, MAN, alongside Ma. Bella V. Profetana, Municipal Health Officer, and Mr. Daniel N. Ariaso Jr., SK Federation President, also took part in the discussions. The forum was efficiently facilitated by Global Care’s project officers and coordinators: Mae Joy T. Dael, Seson Ymas, Nicola Bella Bucatcat, Kang Yejin, and Ralph Siose.

The dialogue underscored the urgency of the issue through critical data:

  • 1 in 10 live births in the Philippines is to mothers aged 10–19
  • 1 in 5 maternal deaths among those aged 15–24 is linked to pregnancy or childbirth complications
  • Over 1.8 million young women (16–24) have left school due to teenage pregnancy
  • The Philippines remains one of the highest in ASEAN for adolescent birth rates

By facilitating knowledge-sharing and collective action, the forum generated practical and community-based strategies toward reducing adolescent pregnancy, improving access to reproductive health services, and strengthening youth empowerment programs.

EVSU-CC’s role as host reinforces its commitment to advancing health education, community engagement, and youth protection efforts across Eastern Visayas. Through multi-sector partnerships, the university remains steadfast in championing initiatives that enable young people to make informed and healthy decisions—paving the way for a more empowered and resilient future generation.

International Health Collaboration and Capacity Building through the Taiwan-Philippines Medical Leaders’ Forum

In its continuous pursuit of internationalization and excellence in health-related education, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) proudly participated in the 2024 Taiwan-Philippines Medical Leaders’ Forum held on May 7–10, 2024 in Taiwan. EVSU was one of only ten Philippine universities selected by the Taiwan Education Center to join this prestigious event, highlighting the institution’s growing recognition in the field of medical and allied health education.

The international forum brought together academic leaders from top Philippine and Taiwanese universities to strengthen collaborative efforts in medical education and research. It served as a dynamic platform for exploring emerging trends, exchanging best practices, and introducing forward-looking strategies in health sciences. Key discussions focused on curriculum innovation, joint research initiatives, student mobility and global clinical rotations, long-term care systems, and technological advancements shaping medical training worldwide.

Represented by EVSU President Dr. Dennis C. De Paz, together with Prof. Bernard Niño Membrebe, Dean of the College of Technology where the Nutrition and Dietetics program is lodged, and Prof. Faustito A. Aure, Director for Internationalization, the delegation engaged in institutional visits to renowned Taiwanese universities to initiate dialogues on future partnerships and cooperative academic programs.

Dr. De Paz emphasized the strategic importance of EVSU’s involvement, noting that participation in such international platforms enhances the university’s capability to elevate its global standing and enrich its educational offerings.

By bringing home new knowledge and international best practices, EVSU continues to upgrade its curriculum design, expand faculty development programs, and strengthen its contribution to national and regional healthcare outcomes.

This successful engagement builds upon EVSU’s active involvement in international consortia such as Edu-Connect Southeast Asia Association, which has played a pivotal role in connecting the university to regional academic and technological networks. The partnerships established during the forum are expected to open new avenues for collaborative research, international training opportunities, and capacity-building initiatives for both students and faculty.

Through this milestone participation, EVSU reaffirms its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates in the health professions and advancing community-centered healthcare solutions aligned with global standards and goals.

Multi-Sectoral Free Medical and Dental Caravan for Tacloban City

As part of its commitment to accessible healthcare and community well-being, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) served as one of the primary venues for the “LAB for All” Free Medical and Dental Caravan, benefiting residents of Tacloban City and nearby communities. Conducted on July 2–3, 2024 at the EVSU Inner Court, Northern Barangay, and the Remedios Trinidad Romualdez Medical Foundation (RTRMF), with a Grand Caravan held on July 4, 2024 at the RTRMF Gym, the event delivered essential healthcare services to hundreds of beneficiaries across the city.

This collaborative initiative was made possible through the strong partnership of Tingog Party List, Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVMC), City Health Office, Department of Health, and the Local Government Unit of Tacloban City, with EVSU’s leadership ensuring an organized and community-friendly venue.

A wide range of health services was offered free of charge, including:

  • HIV screening
  • Routine vaccination
  • PhilHealth kiosk services
  • X-ray services
  • Medical and dental consultations

Beneficiaries were required only to present a photocopy of a valid ID—while children were permitted to provide a birth certificate or school ID—ensuring that services remained inclusive and barrier-free for all.

By hosting this large-scale humanitarian health initiative, EVSU demonstrated its proactive role as a community health partner, expanding access to essential care particularly for underserved populations in Eastern Visayas. The university continues to strengthen its collaborations with government and health institutions, actively contributing to the broader goals of improved public health, early detection of health conditions, and preventive care advocacy.

Through sustained health outreach programs such as this, EVSU reaffirms its mission to uplift communities by linking education, service, and compassionate healthcare delivery.

Campus-Wide Blood Donation Initiative in Partnership with the Department of Health

Demonstrating its commitment to community health and lifesaving services, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), through the Office of the University Physician in collaboration with the Emergency Medical Technician Unit and the Office of the Dental Clinic, successfully launched a Blood Donation Drive on August 28 at the Administration Building.

This initiative was conducted in partnership with the Department of Health Regional Office VIII, reinforcing EVSU’s strong collaboration with government health institutions in supporting national blood sufficiency programs. The activity brought together students, faculty, and non-teaching personnel as volunteers and donors, each contributing to the shared mission of saving lives within the region and beyond.

The event not only provided an avenue for the EVSU community to participate in a compassionate and impactful cause but also promoted awareness of the importance of regular voluntary blood donation in emergency preparedness and healthcare delivery.

Through activities such as this, EVSU continues to champion accessible and community-centered health initiatives, strengthening its role as a proactive partner in safeguarding public health and well-being.
