Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) is deeply committed to promoting health and well-being in its surrounding communities through a wide range of outreach programs and volunteer initiatives. Guided by its mission of service, the university leverages its academic expertise, student engagement, and institutional partnerships to address pressing health needs in the region

EVSU regularly conducts medical and dental missions, hygiene and sanitation campaigns, and nutrition education activities in partnership with local government units, health offices, and non-government organizations. These initiatives not only provide direct services but also empower communities with knowledge on proper hygiene, balanced diets, and preventive healthcare.

The university also integrates student volunteerism into its outreach, where students from allied health, education, and engineering programs actively participate in organizing and implementing health drives. Such initiatives include family planning awareness sessions, sports and fitness programs for youth, and wellness activities for the elderly aimed at promoting active and healthy aging.

In addition, EVSU extends its support to displaced families and vu lnerable groups, particularly in times of disaster and crisis. Through coordinated efforts, the university provides psychosocial support, basic health services, and information campaigns that enhance resilience and well-being among affected populations.

By continuously delivering health-focused outreach programs, EVSU reaffirms its role as a catalyst for community empowerment. These initiatives not only strengthen the university’s social responsibility but also cultivate in its students and faculty a strong sense of compassion, volunteerism, and civic duty. Through these sustained efforts, EVSU contributes to building healthier, more resilient communities across Eastern Visayas.

Univ conducts Medical and Dental Fair, promotes healthy student community

In line with its commitment to promote health and wellness within the university community, the University Medical and Dental Office held a Dental and Medical Fair on February 19, 2024 at the Administration Building Lobby. The activity provided free health consultations and services to students, faculty, and staff to encourage proactive health care and greater awareness of personal well-being.

The initiative aligned with the University’s celebration of its Foundation Anniversary and reflected EVSU’s vision of becoming a service-driven institution that values the holistic development of its constituents.

University health personnel emphasized that the fair aimed to help individuals monitor essential health indicators, such as blood sugar level, blood type, and blood pressure, as well as gain important information regarding their overall health status.

In addition to the medical services offered, the dental team provided free tooth extraction, oral prophylaxis, cavity filling, and consultations to address the diverse oral health needs of the university community.

The event showcased the active participation of students, many of whom appreciated the opportunity to receive vital health services conveniently and at no cost, acknowledging its importance in promoting a healthier campus environment.

Through this initiative, the University reinforced its dedication to fostering a safe, health-conscious, and empowered learning community.

EVSU Carigara facilitates Multi-Stakeholder Forum on adolescent reproductive health crisis

On April 18, 2024, the Carigara Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion was held at the Eastern Visayas State University – Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC) mini gymnasium. Spearheaded by Global Care Philippines and KOICA, the event brought together key stakeholders to confront the urgent issue of teenage pregnancy and reproductive health among Filipino youth.

The forum was graced by a distinguished roster of advocates and experts, including Ma’am Lydia Sagong, Branch Manager of Global Care Philippines; Atty. Wenceslao Narido, Municipal Administrator of Carigara; Dr. Mary Grace Tan Uy, Vice President of the Philippine Pediatric Society and National Chair Advocate against Teenage Pregnancy; Coach Marife F. Garfin, Certified Life and Mental Health Coach from Life Coach Philippines, EV; and Mr. Clark Windell D. Averila, Nurse III from the Provincial Health Office.

Also present were Mr. Marvin Allen G. Guyjoco and Roxanne E. Marson, RN, MAN, representing DOH EV–CHD; Ma. Bella V. Profetana, Municipal Health Officer; and Daniel N. Ariaso Jr., SK Federation President. The event was facilitated by dedicated Global Care staff including Mae Joy T. Dael, Seson Ymas, Nicola Bella Bucatcat, Kang Yejin, and Ralph Siose, who served as Project Officers and Coordinators.

The forum addressed alarming statistics:

  • 1 in 10 live births in the Philippines is to mothers aged 10–19 years old
  • 1 in 5 mothers aged 15–24 dies due to pregnancy or childbirth complications
  • Over 1.8 million girls aged 16–24 have dropped out of school due to teenage pregnancy
  • The Philippines ranks among the highest in teenage pregnancy rates in the ASEAN region

Through open dialogue, expert insights, and collaborative planning, the forum provided a platform for actionable strategies aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy, improving access to reproductive health services, and empowering adolescents to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures.

Eastern Visayas State University Hosted Free Medical and Dental Caravan for Tacloban City Residents

Eastern Visayas State University served as a venue for a free medical and dental caravan that was open to residents of Tacloban City and nearby communities. The “LAB for All” caravan was a joint initiative by Tingog Party List, Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVMC), City Health Office, Department of Health, and the Local Government Unit of Tacloban City.

The caravan offered various services to the public, including:

  • HIV Screening
  • Vaccination
  • PhilHealth Kiosk Services
  • X-Ray Service
  • Medical and Dental Consultation

The caravan was held at the following locations and dates:

  • July 2 & 3:
    • EVSU Inner Court
    • Northern Barangay
    • Remedios Trinidad Romualdez Medical Foundation (RTRMF)

July 4 (Grand Caravan):

  • RTRMF Gym

Residents of Tacloban City and nearby communities were encouraged to avail themselves of these free services. A photocopy of a valid ID was required, while a photocopy of a birth certificate or school ID sufficed for children.

Two Decades of Compassion: EVSU Blood Letting Event

The Office of the University Physician, in collaboration with the Emergency Medical Technician and the Office of the Dental Clinic, successfully spearheaded a Blood Donation Drive at the Administration Building on August 28–29, 2024. The initiative formed part of Eastern Visayas State University’s 20th Charter Day Celebration and aimed to promote the spirit of volunteerism and community care among students, faculty, and staff.

This meaningful activity was also organized in partnership with the Department of Health Regional Office VIII and other supporting agencies. Through this collective effort, the University community demonstrated its commitment to saving lives and supporting the blood bank needs of the region. Volunteers actively participated and contributed to strengthening the health system by donating blood for the benefit of patients and constituents requiring lifesaving transfusions.

EVSU-Carigara launches a community-based diabetes awareness and screening program

In a proactive effort to address growing health concerns in the local community, the non-teaching employees of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) – Carigara Campus, in collaboration with the Barangay Council of San Pedro, launched the DIA-Life Project with the theme “Empower Health: Unification Against Diabetes.” The initiative took place on December 4, 2024, and marked the beginning of a series of health-focused extension activities aimed at promoting wellness and early detection of chronic conditions.

As part of the project’s first phase, residents of Brgy. San Pedro were provided with free blood pressure checks and blood sugar tests, helping identify potential health risks and raising awareness about diabetes prevention and management. The activity served as a vital step in understanding the community’s health needs and fostering a culture of proactive healthcare.

This initiative was part of EVSU-Carigara Campus’s broader commitment to community engagement and public service. By mobilizing its non-teaching workforce, the university demonstrated that every member of the academic community played a role in uplifting lives.

The event was made possible through the strong support of Barangay Captain Hon. Orlando P. Sudario, his barangay officials, and dedicated barangay health workers. Their collaboration ensured the smooth implementation of the activity and encouraged active participation from community members.

Looking ahead, the DIA-Life Project was expected to continue with follow-up health activities every 2 to 3 months, reinforcing EVSU’s dedication to sustained health education and outreach. These recurring efforts aimed to build healthier communities through consistent monitoring, education, and empowerment.

Eastern Visayas State University continues to uphold its commitment to community service and public health promotion through a series of health-related outreach programs designed to improve well-being, empower local communities, and strengthen linkages between the university and its partner institutions.

Among these initiatives is the Culinary Competency Enhancement Program for the Dietary Department staff of Divine Word Hospital, which equipped participants with practical knowledge and skills to prepare healthier and more appealing meals—ultimately improving patient satisfaction and health outcomes.

EVSU also implemented a Women’s Empowerment and Livelihood Program, training girls and women to produce and market homemade dishwashing liquid. This initiative fostered entrepreneurship, promoted hygiene, and provided participants with the means to achieve financial independence, contributing to improved community health and economic resilience.

In addition, the university conducted an Electrical Safety and Awareness Program that oriented barangay electricians, practicing technicians, and technology-inclined individuals on the proper handling of electrical systems, standard safety practices, and scientific principles of electricity. This initiative, supported by instructional materials in the Waray-Waray dialect, helped prevent electrical-related accidents and enhanced community safety and disaster resilience.

EVSU also promoted health and wellness through its Placemaking Program, which engaged communities in identifying and redesigning open spaces for recreational and social purposes. This initiative not only enhanced environmental sustainability but also encouraged physical activity, social cohesion, and mental well-being among residents.

Through these collective efforts, EVSU demonstrates its holistic approach to health promotion—addressing physical, mental, environmental, and socio-economic well-being—while empowering communities to take an active role in improving their quality of life.
