Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) remains steadfast in its mission to make higher education accessible and inclusive, particularly for learners who are the first in their families to enter university. As a public higher education institution serving Eastern Visayas—a region marked by diverse socio-economic realities—EVSU provides pathways for educational advancement among underrepresented and first-generation students.

Each academic year, a significant proportion of EVSU’s student population comprises first-generation college students—individuals whose parents or guardians did not attain a tertiary degree. The University acknowledges the transformative impact of providing these students with opportunities to break intergenerational barriers to education, social mobility, and employment.

EVSU’s admissions and scholarship policies are anchored on Republic Act 10931 (Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act), ensuring that financially disadvantaged but deserving students gain free access to quality higher education. Complementing this are targeted interventions such as academic bridging programs, student mentorship and guidance initiatives, and community-based outreach programs that support learners transitioning from marginalized backgrounds.

Through the SASO and the University Guidance Office, EVSU continuously monitors and assists first-generation students in their academic journey providing psychosocial support, peer mentoring, and career guidance. The University’s strong partnership with CHED, LGUs, and private donors also enables scholarships and financial aid that help sustain their education.

By increasing the number and proportion of first-generation students starting degree programs, EVSU reinforces its role as a catalyst for inclusive development and equitable access to higher education. This commitment aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) ensuring that higher learning remains a right, not a privilege.
