TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) recently conducted a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony for the “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program” last February 11.
The tutoring program is a collaboration between DSWD, the City Government of Tacloban, the Department of Education, the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), and Leyte Normal University.
University president, Dr. Dennis C. de Paz led EVSU’s delegation comprised of College of Education Dean Dr. Jovito B. Madeja and Focal Persons Dr. Leancel Homeres and Dr. Bryan H. Gervacio.
The Tara Basa tutoring program is presented as a three-pronged approach to social welfare intervention, focusing on three types of beneficiaries from financially struggling families: (1) college students who will receive cash-for-work support; (2) parents or guardians of learners from financially struggling families; and (3) learners who will be tutored by trained student beneficiaries from State and Local Universities and Colleges.
DSWD plans to expand the program this year, covering the Samar province as well as Tacloban and Ormoc City. As discussed during the ceremony, the initiative has a current total target goal of 1,508 college students, 5,040 learners, and 5,040 parents.
With its expansion set to reach more communities in the region, the Tara Basa tutoring program aims to create a lasting impact by empowering students, supporting families, and most importantly, promoting a culture of learning. With the combined efforts of partner institutions, the program drives real change—opening doors for students, easing the burden on families, and helping communities grow stronger together.
