News EVSU-Carigara launches a community-based diabetes awareness and screening program in Tunga, Leyte

Leyte, Philippines – In a proactive effort to address growing health concerns in the local community, non-teaching employees of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) – Carigara Campus, in collaboration with the Barangay Council of San Pedro, launched the DIA-Life Project with the theme “Empower Health: Unification Against Diabetes.” The initiative took place on December 4, 2024, and marks the beginning of a series of health-focused extension activities aimed at promoting wellness and early detection of chronic conditions.

As part of the project’s first phase, residents of Brgy. San Pedro were provided with free blood pressure checks and blood sugar tests, helping identify potential health risks and raising awareness about diabetes prevention and management. The activity served as a vital step in understanding the community’s health needs and fostering a culture of proactive healthcare.

This initiative is part of EVSU-Carigara Campus’s broader commitment to community engagement and public service. By mobilizing its non-teaching workforce, the university demonstrates that every member of the academic community plays a role in uplifting lives.

The event was made possible through the strong support of Barangay Captain Hon. Orlando P. Sudario, his barangay officials, and dedicated barangay health workers. Their collaboration ensured smooth implementation and encouraged active participation from community members.

Looking ahead, the DIA-Life Project will continue with follow-up health activities every 2 to 3 months, reinforcing EVSU’s dedication to sustained health education and outreach. These recurring efforts aim to build healthier communities through consistent monitoring, education, and empowerment.
