News EVSU conducts benchmarking visit to SLSU to strengthen sustainability initiatives

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) conducted a benchmarking visit to Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), beginning with a courtesy call with University President Dr. Jude A. Duarte. The activity is part of EVSU’s ongoing efforts to enhance institutional strategies and align its sustainability initiatives with global standards.

The EVSU delegation, led by Dr. Analyn C. Españo, Vice President for Students, Internationalization, and External Affairs, along with heads of various university offices, aimed to observe best practices and exchange insights related to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings—an international ranking system that evaluates universities on environmental friendliness, eco-efficiency, and resource-conscious practices.

Southern Leyte State University has demonstrated exemplary performance in the 2025 UI GreenMetric rankings, securing Rank 1 in Eastern Visayas, Rank 6 nationwide, and Rank 348 worldwide.

During the visit, EVSU officials were briefed on SLSU’s sustainability programs, governance frameworks, and operational strategies that contributed to its ranking performance. Discussions highlighted the importance of data-driven planning, institutional policies, infrastructure development, and community participation in advancing sustainability goals. The delegation also participated in a campus tour, including a visit to SLSU’s Tomas Oppus campus, allowing them to observe firsthand the university’s environmentally sustainable facilities and practices.

The UI GreenMetric framework was recognized as a valuable guide in strengthening institutional environmental performance.

The benchmarking activity also supports EVSU’s initiatives under the National University Resilience and Climate Action (NURCA) framework, reinforcing the University’s commitment to resilience-building, climate-responsive policies, and sustainable campus development. Insights gained from the visit are expected to inform strategic planning as EVSU advances its environmental and climate action agenda.
