The Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) and Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus (PSHS-EVC) on May 26 at the Leyte Provincial Capitol Governor’s Office to collaborate in the operations of the first-ever Eastern Visayas Science Centrum (EVSC)
The opening of the first science tourism spot in Eastern Visayas, as initiated by the DOST VIII and PLGU, will help students across the region to gain a lifelong interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) by showcasing interactive exhibits.
Aside from offering a fun and interesting learning environment, EVSC can foster curiosity and the love for learning among students to pave a way for their future success in school and their careers.
As part of the terms of the MOU, the third-year BSEd Science students of the Science and Mathematics Education Department (SMED) of the College of Education will serve as volunteer guides in operating the interactive exhibits for one year. Their service will be credited as part of their field study and internship program requirements in their fourth year level.
For the volunteer guides to be equipped with knowledge and skills in operating the said exhibits, a training program was organized by the Faculty of the Physics Unit of PSHS-EVC on May 27, 2023.
In the said training, the volunteer guides were taught how to present the mechanics and the science concepts behind each exhibit for clearer and easier grasp of ideas among the viewers. The Science Centrum has been in operation since June 1. It is located at Leyte Academic Center, Brgy. Pawing, Palo, Leyte and opens from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
