News EVSU Joins UP Tacloban’s Push to Strengthen Waray Language

The Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) joined the call to strengthen the Waray and Binisaya languages as it took part in the second installment of the “Pagpakusog han Aton Pinulungan Roundtable Series” held at the Leyte Samar Heritage Center, University of the Philippines Tacloban College. The roundtable gathered advocates and language practitioners to exchange insights and strategies on advancing local language education and preservation.

Organized by UP Tacloban College through the Leyte Samar Heritage Center (LSHC), the discussion revolved around the theme “Learning Materials Production Using Eastern Visayas Local Languages.” The event brought together writers, educators, researchers, and cultural workers who share the commitment to promote and preserve the linguistic and cultural heritage of the region.

Representing EVSU, Dr. Analyn C. Españo served as one of the discussants and presented her topic, “Unearthing Folkloric Narratives for Pedagogic Material Development: Sustaining Waray in the Evolving MTB-MLE Landscape.” In her presentation, Dr. Españo shared folkloric narratives she collected from various provinces in Samar, highlighting how these local stories can be developed into effective teaching materials that uphold cultural identity while supporting the implementation of the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) program.

Students and teachers from EVSU and other universities also actively participated in the open forum, exchanging ideas on how institutions can collaborate to strengthen regional language instruction and research.

The Pagpakusog han Aton Pinulungan series seeks to gather valuable insights that will help shape policies promoting the use of Eastern Visayas languages in education, research, and communication.

The series was first launched on September 19, 2025.
