In celebration of its 119th founding anniversary, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) strengthened its commitment to sustainability and climate action by officially institutionalizing the PUNLA-NURCA Adopt-a-Site Program in Brgy. Bacong, Babatngon, Leyte.
Through a strategic partnership with Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 8 (CENRO-Palo) and the Nabungcagan Farmers and Fishermen Association (NAFFA), EVSU is transforming a two-hectare National Greening Program (NGP) “Graduated Site” into a Living Laboratory dedicated to ecological restoration, research, and community-driven environmental stewardship.
The launch featured a ceremonial tree planting activity led by University President Dr. Dennis C. De Paz, alongside members of the Administrative and Academic Councils. The symbolic planting of trees emphasizes the university’s enduring commitment to sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.
More than a commemorative activity, the PUNLA-NURCA initiative aims to bridge academic instruction and community engagement. By converting the site into a Living Laboratory, EVSU provides students and faculty with opportunities for hands-on research in biodiversity assessment, carbon monitoring, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping. At the same time, the program supports local livelihoods and fosters collaborative environmental management with partner communities.
In a parallel show of unity and environmental advocacy, the university also launched its City Clean-Up Walk for NURCA. The initiative formally opened with a program that gathered students, faculty, and staff in a shared commitment to environmental responsibility. Dr. Ronald Madera delivered the welcome message, followed by President De Paz, who emphasized the purpose of PUNLA for NURCA and its vital role in advancing EVSU’s vision of becoming a National University for Resiliency and Climate Action.
Despite inclement weather, the Clean-Up Walk proceeded successfully within the university premises. NSTP students, faculty members, and staff carried out coordinated clean-up activities in their designated areas, demonstrating resilience and collective determination.
Beyond waste collection, the initiative promoted proper waste management practices, encouraged sustainable habits, and strengthened collaboration across the academic community. Together, these anniversary initiatives reflect EVSU’s proactive leadership in environmental stewardship—sustaining excellence and innovation as it moves closer to its NURCA aspirations.
Through PUNLA-NURCA and the City Clean-Up Walk, EVSU continues to lead by example, proving that institutional milestones can serve not only as moments of celebration, but also as catalysts for meaningful and lasting environmental action.
