Tacloban City, Philippines — EVSU formally opened its Women’s Month observance with a program themed “Lead Like the Babaylans,” highlighting the institution’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Despite the inclement weather, the day began with a symbolic march under the rain, followed by a prayer and a video presentation featuring empowered women throughout history.
Dr. Glenda Tupaz, GAD Director, delivered the opening message, emphasizing the importance of narrowing the gender gap within the university. She outlined the series of activities planned for Women’s Month and concluded with a call to action: “Just like the Babaylans, we push for gender equality.”
EVSU President Dr. Dennis C. de Paz followed with a speech recognizing the contributions of women leaders in government, education, and other sectors. He honored women educators, non-teaching staff, and students of EVSU, stressing that their presence is not merely participation but a manifestation of leadership.
Councilor Jom Bagulaya delivered a solidarity message reflecting on the historical and contemporary disparities in women’s rights. Hon. Bagulaya invoked the Babaylans—traditional healers and leaders in pre-colonial Philippine society—as enduring symbols of wisdom and empowerment.
The program concluded with performances by Samleyaw, capped by a video finale that reinforced the themes of justice, dignity, and women’s empowerment.
Through this commemoration, EVSU reaffirmed its dedication to advancing gender equality, drawing inspiration from the Babaylans as models of leadership and resilience in Philippine history.
