News EVSU partners with Abuyog LGU for Beeware Application SMART DEWS launch and turnover

The Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) formally entered into a partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Abuyog, Leyte through the signing of Technology Use Agreement, signed on September 24, marking the launch and turnover of the Beeware Application SMART DEWS.

Said Agreement was signed by Abuyog Municipal Mayor Hon. Lemuel Gin K. Traya, MDRRMO Head Erik V. Barcelo, and Municipal Administrator Luz Concha K. Daganzo on behalf of the LGU; while EVSU was represented by Vice President for Research Innovation and Extension Dr. Danilo B. Pulma, Project Leader Dr. Lyra K. Nuevas, and Director for Extension Services Prof. Rustom Clemente.

The newly turned over Disaster Early Warning System (DEWS) was developed with the goal of finding innovative ways of enhancing the community’s disaster preparedness and reinforce the initiatives of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

The Beeware application SMART DEWS is capable of more than just sending alerts, the system transforms these warnings into actionable information by providing GPS-based evacuation routes and guiding residents on when and where to evacuate.

Accessible through Android, iOS, and web platforms, it delivers notifications via both push alerts and SMS.

The project is a product of collaboration between EVSU’s technical team led by Dr. Nuevas, the LGU, and community stakeholders.

Initiatives such as this serve as an embodiment of “research into action” and EVSU’s thrust towards becoming the National University for Resiliency and Climate Action (NURCA).
