News NU chess masters visit EVSU, await partnership in sports

The National University chess masters visited the Eastern Visayas State University to share insights and techniques to the university’s chess athletes and coaches in preparation of EVSU’s chess team for the forthcoming SCUAA, June 27 at the EVSU-MPC Building.

The team was composed of US chess master and National Master (USNM) Jose Aquino, Jr., Head Coach, and awardee of the National Master title by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in 2022-2023; Mr. Allan Doroy, the assistant coach of the National University women’s chess from 2018 to present; and the reigning MVP of the UAAP Chess and WFM (Women FIDE Master) Allaney Jia Doroy.

The University President, Dr. Dennis C. de Paz, was enthusiastic in meeting the team and agreed for possible partnership in promoting and training students in playing chess.

Being chess enthusiasts themselves, the couple Prof. Nelson and Joie Manadong, invited the team to share their tips to excel in competitions.

Hence, the University’s chess coaches, Dr. Jake Algo and Prof. Victorio P. Labrador, in coordination with the Sports Development Office, through Dr. Joel Alfarero,Sports Director organized the activity.

The worthwhile undertaking enlivened the spirit of sportsmanship among the attendees and wished the NU team’s success as they join the National Chess Open in Tacloban City.
