Leyte, Philippines – In observance of Cervical Awareness Month, the Dental and Medical Section of Eastern Visayas State University – Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC), in collaboration with the Gender and Development Youth Council (GADYC), organized an impactful orientation session on May 10, 2024, at the campus mini gymnasium. The event aimed to raise awareness about cervical health and empower women with knowledge and preventive care strategies.
The session was spearheaded by Mrs. Bonita Shigella Cotoner, RN, MAN, the campus school nurse, alongside Mr. John Nino Pallan, GAD Coordinator. Mrs. Cotoner delivered a comprehensive talk outlining six key strategies for women to prioritize their cervical health. These included:
1. Regular screening through Pap smears or HPV tests
2. Vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV)
3. Adoption of safe sex practices
4. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle
5. Staying informed about cervical health
Attending follow-up appointments as advised by healthcare providers
Her expert guidance emphasized the importance of early detection and proactive health behavior in preventing cervical cancer and promoting overall well-being.
The event was attended by first-year female students and university employees, creating a safe and informative space for dialogue on women’s health. By providing actionable strategies and accessible resources, the orientation contributed to enhancing health equity within the academic community.
