TACLOBAN CITY – On Friday, February 21, 2025, the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) alongside its project associates and stakeholders participated in the blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremonies of the Smart Campus Project. This event marked the beginning of a transformative alliance among industry giants and government sector partners, making it even more significant as it coincided with the university’s week-long celebration of its 118th founding anniversary. Rev. Fr. Kelvin M. Apurillo, University Chaplain, performed the building dedication, which began at the newly installed gateway and continued to the new administration building. The official program followed at the Graduate School Function Hall shortly after the Benediction.
The Smart University Project, which began its operation in December 2023, is currently 37% complete. It has already produced several innovative infrastructures including smart classrooms, e-laboratories, the administration building, the Powerhouse, and the Innovation Center, to name a few.
In his address, Dr. Dennis C. de Paz, University President, highlighted that this project symbolizes the institution’s commitment to progress. “This Smart Campus Project will push EVSU to be at the forefront of education in the digital world,” he stated, emphasizing EVSU’s technology-driven culture, rich history, and dynamic plans for the future. De Paz also expressed profound gratitude to government partners, particularly the Tingog Partylist, whose relentless support has turned this visionary initiative into reality. Funding for the project was made possible through the help of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, and the TINGOG Partylist, through representatives Yedda Marie K. Romualdez, and Philip Jude S. Acidre.
Dr. Imelda C. Laceras, Regional Director of DBM R08, was present at the program and shared her initial thoughts about the project, given her limited IT expertise. However, witnessing the developments firsthand during the inauguration reaffirmed her belief in the project’s value. She spoke fondly of her four brothers, who are all EVSU alumni, and how the smart campus project will benefit future generations, including her own grandchildren. Dr. Laceras praised how the allocated budget was effectively utilized and transformed into operational systems and infrastructures. She concluded by highlighting the importance of collaboration and leadership in the successful execution of the project.
Hon. Wilson Uy, representing Hon. Carlos Jericho L. Petilla, graced the event. In his speech, he focused on how the modernization of teaching modalities through the smart campus technology will enhance the learning experience of students and open new opportunities for the academic community.
Representing Mayor Alfred Romualdez was City Councilor Christopher Randy Esperas. He relayed the City Mayor’s full support for the university’s endeavors, particularly projects that strengthen innovative education. Councilor Esperas announced several city projects aimed at digitalization, such as free public WiFi through DICT’s initiative and the groundbreaking of the International Convention Center. He suggested incorporating solar systems to ensure the university is not only smart but also sustainable.
At the end of the program, Mr. Myrvin Cortes, COO of Lancaster (LTD), representing their CEO, Mr. John M. Domantay, explained the state-of-the-art technology offered by the smart university project. He emphasized that the facilities inaugurated are proof of what can be achieved through collaboration and innovation. He described the smart classrooms as equipped with top-of-the-line computing devices and interactive boards that elevate student engagement. These technologies enable real-time presentations, wireless device connectivity, and collaborative learning, making the virtual learning experience tangible. With distance learning capabilities, EVSU can reach more students, especially those in remote areas who face barriers to education. As his address ended COO Cortes reaffirmed the LTD’s commitment towards finishing phase 1 of the SMART Campus Enhancement project.
The Smart University Project is in its infancy. The Eastern Visayas State University, along with its dedicated partners from both the private and government sectors, are committed to sustaining this groundbreaking collaboration. Their united vision is to drive the continuous advancement of the region’s educational system and uplift the community, creating a brighter and more innovative future for all.
