Abstract

Society has long recognized the role of information and communication technology (ICT) as an impetus for revolution and change. Networked Readiness Index (NRI) is a tool used to examine the economic and business impact of ICT in a country. It is also the degree of preparation of a community to gain from ICT developments. This study examined the factors that show statistically significant influence on the networked readiness index of thirty-eight (38) Asian countries. The data used were retrieved from Global Information Technology Report (GITR) from the year 2012 to 2016. The independent variables used in this study were intellectual property protection, availability of latest technologies, electricity production, internet and telephone competition, quality of educational system, internet users, capacity for innovation, government prioritization of ICT, knowledge-intensive jobs and lastly, ICT use and government efficiency. Using a panel regression, all of the variables were tested based on the 5% significance level. Heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation were present in the Fixed Effects Model and was corrected through the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) technique. Outcomes have shown that availability of latest technologies, electricity production, internet and telephone competition, internet users, capacity for innovation, knowledge-intensive jobs, and ICT use and government efficiency is statistically significant in explaining the networked readiness of a country. This study suggests that the move towards a digitally competitive and robust economy entails addressing the gridlocks that hamper the nations in reaching their full potential. Policies focused on the significant indicators should be done to attain this possibility. This study broadens our knowledge of the relationship between the Networked Readiness Index and its indicators, specifically in Asian countries. It also helps in determining what measures to be prioritized and what policies to be proposed to make the country a network economy.
