Abstract

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Tacloban City, Philippines, has a strong formal partnership with Save the Children, an international non-governmental organization, to provide technical assistance and capacity building to Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officers (LDRRMO's) in order to assist communities in avoiding fatalities during natural disasters. The purpose of this study was to establish the utility and application of an extension activity begun by EVSU to strengthen mentors' skill in complete Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Management (CBDRRM), with an emphasis on the role of children in Barangay DRRM plans. According to a survey questionnaire, 71% of respondents strongly agreed that the approach was beneficial in understanding the situation of children during emergencies, 62% strongly agreed that they understood the fundamental rights of a child as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC) and how these rights can be protected during disasters, and 57% strongly agreed that they could apply what they had learned. Thus, while the mentors' capability building endeavor is beneficial and appropriate, additional resources are required to enable them to effectively train LDRRMOs in CBDRRM Planning.
