SDG 3 | Good Health and Well-Being

Public Access to University Sports Facilities

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) recognizes that accessible sports and recreational facilities are essential to promoting physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, social inclusion, and overall community well-being. In line with its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), the University extends the use of its sports infrastructure beyond its immediate academic community by providing shared-access arrangements for external stakeholders, including partner government agencies, public institutions, and other eligible community users.

Across its campuses, EVSU provides access to various sports and recreational facilities, including gymnasiums, open and covered courts, multi-purpose sports venues, soccer fields, and other recreational spaces. These facilities support organized sports activities, physical fitness initiatives, inter-agency engagements, and community-oriented programs that encourage active lifestyles and strengthen collaboration between the University and its external partners.

As part of this commitment, EVSU facilitates free access to designated sports facilities for eligible partner government and regulatory agencies, including the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Commission on Audit (COA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), and other regional development and research partners, such as EVCIEERD, EVHRDC, and VICARP. These arrangements, particularly for capacity-building activities, inter-agency wellness initiatives, and collaborative engagements, help maximize the public value of university facilities while fostering stronger institutional partnerships and regional cooperation.

In addition to free-access arrangements for eligible partners, EVSU implements a scheduled, fee-based facility-use system for selected sports venues. This cost-sharing mechanism helps support the upkeep, maintenance, and continued availability of university sports infrastructure while providing external users with opportunities to utilize these facilities under established terms and conditions. Through these complementary arrangements, EVSU promotes the responsible and sustainable use of its resources while broadening opportunities for sports participation, recreation, and physical activity beyond the University community.

This dual access approach—free access for partner agencies and community development activities, and low-cost access for broader public use—EVSU ensures inclusive participation while responsibly managing its resources.

Through its shared-facilities initiatives, EVSU reinforces its role as a public higher education institution committed not only to academic excellence but also to community engagement, inclusive access to recreational resources, and the promotion of healthier communities throughout Eastern Visayas. These efforts contribute to the advancement of SDG 3 by supporting physical well-being and creating opportunities for collaborative, community-oriented use of sports and recreational facilities.

Opening EVSU’s Sports Facilities to Alumni and the Local Community Through the President’s Cup

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) recognizes the importance of making sports facilities valuable resources for physical well-being, recreation, social interaction, and community engagement. Through its sports development initiatives, the University promotes the use of its athletic infrastructure not only for student training and institutional competitions but also for activities that foster stronger relationships among university personnel, alumni, and external stakeholders. This commitment reflects EVSU’s broader role as a public higher education institution that contributes to the health and well-being of the communities it serves.

In 2025, EVSU conducted the President’s Cup, a university-wide sports initiative launched on August 6, 2025, that featured basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and football. The tournament utilized university sports venues, including the Main Campus inner court and other designated sports areas, providing opportunities for organized athletic participation, camaraderie, teamwork, and healthy competition. By bringing together teaching and non-teaching personnel and alumni, the President’s Cup strengthened institutional relationships and encouraged participants to remain physically active through accessible sporting activities.

Beyond its role as an internal sports competition, the President’s Cup highlights the potential of EVSU’s multi-campus sports facilities to serve as shared spaces for engagement among individuals connected to the University and the broader community. The University’s courts, football field, and other athletic venues provide infrastructure that can support organized competitions, recreational activities, and collaborative sports initiatives involving external partners. Such facilities offer opportunities for EVSU to strengthen linkages with local government units, community sports organizations, neighboring educational institutions, and other stakeholders interested in promoting sports and physical fitness.

The University’s commitment to maximizing the use of its sports infrastructure is further reflected in its institutional arrangements for facility access. EVSU identifies selected sports facilities across its campuses for free or fee-based use under specified conditions, providing a mechanism through which authorized external users and partner organizations may access appropriate venues. These arrangements support the productive use and maintenance of university facilities while creating opportunities for sports participation beyond regular academic activities.

Through the President’s Cup and its broader sports-facility access arrangements, EVSU advances a culture of physical activity, inclusion, and collaboration. The initiative contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by encouraging exercise and active lifestyles, while supporting SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through the potential of university infrastructure to serve wider recreational and community needs. It also complements SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by creating opportunities for cooperation with alumni, local institutions, and community stakeholders in advancing sports development.

EVSU continues to recognize its sports facilities as institutional resources with the potential to benefit not only its academic community but also the wider public. To demonstrate the full extent of this commitment under the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rankings, the University may supplement the President’s Cup documentation with records of actual facility use by local schools, community sports clubs, local government units, and other external groups during 2025. Such evidence would further establish how EVSU translates its commitment to sports development into direct community access and shared use of university facilities.

Community Access to Sports Facilities through the EVSU–Burauen Campus 50th Founding Anniversary Football Tournament

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), through its Burauen Campus, promotes sports participation and the productive use of university sports facilities through organized athletic activities that foster physical fitness, sportsmanship, and community engagement. In 2025, EVSU–Burauen Campus celebrated its 50th Founding Anniversary with a series of activities, including a football tournament featuring five teams in the Men’s Open category and two teams in the Under-18 division.

The tournament provided a venue for organized football competition and the development of athletic skills among participants across different age groups. By accommodating both Open and Under-18 divisions, the initiative demonstrated the potential of university sports facilities to support a wider range of sporting participants and encourage greater engagement in physical activity beyond regular academic and instructional programs.

The use of campus sports facilities for organized competitions illustrates EVSU’s commitment to maximizing its athletic infrastructure in support of sports development and well-being. Such initiatives create opportunities to strengthen relationships among athletes, encourage youth participation in sports, and reinforce the role of the University as a resource for local athletic activities.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), particularly the promotion of physical activity and healthier lifestyles, and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), through the potential of university facilities to serve broader community needs.

As part of its commitment to inclusive and community-oriented sports development, EVSU recognizes the importance of extending access to its sports facilities to local schools, youth groups, community sports organizations, and other external stakeholders. Verification of participating teams’ affiliations and documentation of external facility users would further establish the tournament’s direct contribution to sharing university sports facilities with the local community.

Sharing of University Sports Facilities through the EVSU Main Campus Alumni Football Tournament

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) promotes the use of its sports facilities to encourage physical activity, strengthen alumni engagement, and foster a lasting culture of sports participation beyond graduation. In 2025, the University demonstrated this commitment through its month-long Alumni Football Tournament, conducted from July 26 to August 2025 in Tacloban City as part of its Charter Celebration.

The tournament featured four categories: Men’s Open, Men’s 35-and-Above, Women’s, and Mixed Open. By accommodating participants across different age groups and categories, the initiative provided opportunities for alumni to reconnect through sports, engage in friendly competition, and maintain active lifestyles. The activity also highlighted the role of EVSU’s football field as an institutional sports resource that supports organized athletic events beyond regular academic instruction.

Beyond the tournament itself, EVSU’s official report noted that the improved football field remained accessible on designated days for alumni who wished to participate in informal football activities. This arrangement demonstrates the University’s effort to sustain the use of its sports infrastructure beyond scheduled competitions and to provide opportunities for continued recreational engagement among members of its extended university community.

Through this initiative, EVSU illustrates how university sports facilities can support physical well-being, alumni relations, and continuing participation in recreational sports. The initiative contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by encouraging physical activity and healthier lifestyles, while also supporting SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through the productive use of institutional infrastructure for sports and recreation.

The Alumni Football Tournament represents a documented example of EVSU extending access to its sports facilities beyond its regular student population. Further documentation of participation by local sports clubs, community organizations, or other members of the public would strengthen evidence of the University’s broader commitment to sharing its sports facilities with the local community.
