SDG 3 | Good Health and Well-Being

Health Institution Collaboration Initiatives

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) maintains current collaborations with local, national, and, where applicable, global health institutions to improve health and well-being outcomes among its students, employees, and surrounding communities. Through partnerships with hospitals, healthcare providers, government health agencies, and other health-related organizations, the University advances health education, preventive healthcare, medical and wellness services, research, community outreach, and capacity-building initiatives. These collaborations strengthen the University’s capacity to respond to emerging health concerns, promote access to health-related services, and address the diverse health needs of its stakeholders, particularly in Eastern Visayas. Consistent with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3): Good Health and Well-Being, EVSU integrates health promotion and disease prevention into its academic, research, and extension functions while supporting broader regional and national public health priorities. Through these ongoing institutional partnerships, EVSU reaffirms its commitment to collaborative, inclusive, and sustainable approaches that contribute to improved health outcomes and healthier, more resilient communities.

EVSU–PhilHealth YAKAP Caravan: Strengthening Institutional Collaboration for Health and Well-Being

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) demonstrates its institutional commitment to improving health and well-being through active collaboration with health-sector institutions. On November 20, 2025, EVSU Main Campus partnered with PhilHealth Region 8 to conduct the YAKAP Caravan, a full-day health initiative designed to improve access to preventive and primary healthcare services for members of the university and the wider community.

The collaboration brought together EVSU, PhilHealth Region 8, and participating private diagnostic centers to deliver accessible and comprehensive health services. From 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., participants benefited from medical consultations and check-ups, laboratory examinations, cancer screening tests, and free medicines. These services supported early detection of health conditions, preventive healthcare, and informed health management.

As part of the partnership, PhilHealth Region 8 mobilized health resources and worked with Divine Rays Diagnostics, Quest and Reliance Diagnostics, and Raphah Medical and Diagnostic Center to provide technical expertise and diagnostic services. The involvement of these health institutions strengthened the capacity of the university-based initiative to provide practical and accessible healthcare interventions.

The YAKAP Caravan demonstrates that EVSU’s commitment to health and well-being extends beyond internal campus programs to institutional partnerships with government health agencies and private health-service providers. Through its collaboration with PhilHealth Region 8, EVSU helped facilitate access to preventive healthcare, health screening, diagnostic services, and medicines, contributing to improved health awareness, early detection, and proactive health management.

The initiative further demonstrates EVSU’s role as a community-engaged public university, using its institutional network and partnerships to respond to health needs and promote healthier and more resilient communities in Eastern Visayas. The YAKAP Caravan provides concrete evidence of EVSU’s continuing collaboration with health institutions to achieve positive health and well-being outcomes.

EVSU–EVMC Dugtong Buhay: Institutional Collaboration for Health and Well-Being

Eastern Visayas State University–Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC) demonstrates the University’s commitment to improving health and well-being through collaboration with local health institutions. On April 15, 2025, EVSU-CC, in partnership with the Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVMC), conducted “Dugtong Buhay: A Blood-Letting Activity” at the EVSU-CC Mini Gymnasium.

The initiative mobilized the resources and participation of EVSU and its community partners to address the continuing need for an adequate blood supply for patients requiring transfusion. EVSU faculty and employees, together with volunteers from the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Carigara and Tunga, Leyte; the Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB) in Capoocan, Leyte; Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) volunteers; and Information Technology On-the-Job Trainees (OJTs), participated in the blood donation activity.

Through its collaboration with EVMC, a major public healthcare institution in Eastern Visayas, EVSU provided an institutional platform for mobilizing voluntary blood donors and supporting the regional healthcare system. The blood collected through the activity was intended to augment the blood supply of EVMC and other medical facilities, directly benefiting patients who require blood transfusions.

Beyond the provision of blood, the partnership promoted health awareness, volunteerism, community participation, and the life-saving importance of voluntary blood donation. The activity demonstrates how EVSU works with an external health institution to mobilize its university community and contribute tangible resources to address healthcare needs.

The Dugtong Buhay initiative therefore provides concrete evidence of EVSU’s active collaboration with a local health institution to improve health and well-being outcomes. It reflects the University’s broader role as a community-engaged public university that leverages partnerships to support accessible healthcare, strengthen community health systems, and contribute to healthier and more resilient communities in Eastern Visayas.

EVSU–EVMC Blood Donation Partnership: Sustained Collaboration for Community Health

Eastern Visayas State University–Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC) demonstrates its continuing institutional collaboration with local health institutions through its partnership with the Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVMC) in promoting community health and supporting the regional blood supply. Through the EVSU-CC Medical and Dental Section, led by Campus Nurse Bonita Shigella F. Cotoner, the University conducted a blood-letting activity in partnership with the EVMC-Blood Bank Unit at the EVSU-CC gymnasium.

The activity mobilized the EVSU community, with students, faculty, and staff participating as voluntary blood donors. The initiative aimed to augment the local blood supply while promoting awareness of the importance of voluntary blood donation as a life-saving health intervention.

The collaboration involved direct engagement between EVSU health personnel and medical professionals from the EVMC-Blood Bank Unit, who worked with the EVSU Campus Nurse to conduct donor screening and ensure the safe collection and proper handling of donated blood. This demonstrates an operational partnership between the University and a public healthcare institution in addressing an identified community health need.

Following the activity, the donated blood was processed and stored at the EVMC Blood Bank in Tacloban City, where it could be made available for patients requiring emergency transfusions, surgical procedures, and other medical treatments. Through this arrangement, EVSU’s institutional resources and community participation contributed directly to strengthening the availability of blood for patients in need.

The activity also promoted a culture of health responsibility, volunteerism, and civic engagement among EVSU students and employees. The commitment expressed by the EVSU-CC administration to make the activity a regular campus initiative further demonstrates the University’s intention to sustain its partnership with EVMC and contribute continuously to community health needs.

The EVSU-CC–EVMC blood donation initiative therefore provides concrete evidence that EVSU, as an institution, actively collaborates with a local public health institution to improve health and well-being outcomes. The partnership combines health expertise from EVMC with the University’s capacity to mobilize its students, faculty, and staff, resulting in a tangible contribution to the regional healthcare system and to patients requiring life-saving blood transfusions.

EVSU–GlobalCare KOICA Partnership for Adolescent Health Promotion

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), through its Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC), actively collaborates with GlobalCare Korea International Cooperation Agency (GlobalCare KOICA) in advancing adolescent sexual and reproductive health and improving health and well-being outcomes among young people in Leyte. The partnership culminated in a recognition ceremony on November 12, 2025, at Hotel de Fides in Tacloban City, where GlobalCare KOICA acknowledged EVSU-CC for its significant contributions to the successful implementation of the Adolescent Sex and Reproductive Health Promotion Project in Leyte.

The collaborative initiative addressed adolescent pregnancy and reproductive health challenges by integrating comprehensive sexuality education and promoting access to youth-friendly health services on campus and in surrounding communities. Through this partnership, EVSU-CC contributed to improving adolescent health literacy and access to essential health information and services. The project’s accomplishments also included capacity-building activities for local health workers, the development of peer-education programs, and the establishment of youth-friendly spaces for counseling and information dissemination. These interventions empowered young people to make informed decisions concerning their sexual and reproductive health while strengthening the capacity of local stakeholders to respond to adolescent health needs.

Beyond the project’s immediate outcomes, the collaboration demonstrated EVSU’s commitment to working with international development partners and local stakeholders to address pressing public health concerns through education, community engagement, and institutional cooperation. During the culmination activity, represented by Campus Director Renato E. Martija, EVSU-CC received a plaque of appreciation recognizing its collaborative contribution. Both organizations also reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining adolescent health and rights advocacy beyond the project’s formal completion, including discussions on institutionalizing effective practices and extending their reach to more vulnerable communities in Leyte.

This partnership directly supports Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3): Good Health and Well-Being, particularly the promotion of sexual and reproductive health, the prevention of adolescent pregnancy, and improved access to health information and services. It also reflects EVSU’s role in translating institutional and international partnerships into community-based health interventions that contribute to healthier, better-informed, and more empowered youth.
