In recent years, the importance of values education has been widely recognized as a critical component of holistic development in educational systems around the world. Values education aims to promote the moral, ethical, and social development of students, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed decisions, exhibit empathy and compassion, and contribute positively to society (Papadopoulos, et al., 2016). In the context of the Philippines, a country with diverse cultural backgrounds and societal challenges, the effective integration and contextualization of values education within the curriculum have become essential to address the unique needs and values of Filipino students. The Philippine educational system has long emphasized the significance of values education, as reflected in various educational policies and curriculum frameworks. The Department of Education (DepEd) has continuously emphasized the inclusion of values education across grade levels, recognizing the role it plays in shaping the character of learners. However, despite these efforts, challenges persist in optimizing the teaching of values education and ensuring its effectiveness. One of the key challenges is the integration of values education across different subject areas. Traditionally, values education has been taught as a stand-alone subject, detached from other academic disciplines. This compartmentalized approach limits the opportunities for students to see the relevance of values in real-life situations and inhibits their ability to connect values to their academic learning (Frey, et al., 2019). By integrating values education within other subject areas, students can develop a deeper understanding of how values permeate various aspects of their lives and the world around them. Moreover, contextualizing values education is crucial to address the diversity of values and cultural backgrounds present in the Philippines. The country is known for its rich cultural heritage, with a diverse population encompassing different religions, ethnicities, and traditions. Therefore, a one-size-fits-all approach to values education may not effectively resonate with all students. By contextualizing values education, educators can adapt teaching strategies and content to align with the local context, values, and cultural norms, promoting a more inclusive and relevant learning experience. This research aims to explore strategies for optimizing the teaching of values education through integration and contextualization in the Philippine context. By examining the current practices and challenges faced by educators, this study seeks to identify effective strategies that can enhance the integration of values education within the curriculum and promote its contextualization to cater to the diverse values and cultural backgrounds of Filipino students.
