This year’s POVCON (Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development Conference via Zoom) was attended by researchers from all over the country. As one of the eleven (11), Eastern Visayas State University has participated in the league since its inception. This year, EVSU won two awards for best paper presentation.
An article by Natural Sciences Department (NSD) Prof. Rosemarie B. Galanza entitled “Simple Technology Is Not Always Practical: The Case of Tagpo (Ardisia Species) Extract Molluscicides” received the Best Paper Presenter Award in Track 3 Science and Technology Intervention for Resilient Communities. After the Panel Evaluation, she was joined by her co-author Ms. Ma Florlyn Gayas, Prof. Grechelle Socias, Prof. Fe T. Piedad, and NSD Head, Prof. Darwin C. Gomez, who all addressed questions.
Another paper, entitled GIS-based Model in Identifying Areas for Municipal Evacuation Center to Minimize Socio-economic Impact among Small-scale Businesses in Burauen, Leyte, received the same award under Track 2 Leadership and Public Governance in Times of Crisis, presented by Burauen Campus Prof. Lyka R. Comora and NSD Prof. Julius Ken P. Badeo.
Physico-chemical and sensory evaluation of Igot (Syzygium curranii) wine, presented by Prof. Fe T. Piedad, Prof. Darwin C. Gomez, Prof. Grechelle N. Socias, and Mr. Romeo D. Tecson Jr. from NSD, was also presented under Track 3’s.
Leyte-Samar Tourism and the East Visayas Bayanihan Culture: An Assessment Towards the Development of an Operational Local Tourism Framework was also presented. From the College of Arts and Sciences, authors are Prof. Remedios C. Daban, Prof. Joezenon A. Purog, Dr. Thomas Lyndon B. Blanco, Prof. Pascualito M. Ilagan, Prof. Ma. Elvira Martija, Prof. Susana V. Loyola, Prof. Erlinda G. Ayles, Prof. Kay Bathala H. Santos, and Prof. Rodel Ponferrada.
Prof. Maria Daisy Lagdamen, from the Department of Economics at EVSU, made a short video entitled The Resilience of the Cogon Small Farmers Association. The subject of the video is how farmers were able to persevere in the face of adversity.
There has been an increase in the number of EVSU researchers over the last several years, and the number is expected to keep increasing as we aim to become a research institution at par with ASEAN HEIs.
