EVSU celebrates National Women’s Month

The Eastern Visayas State University- Gender and Development Office, through Director Fatima Socorro M. Quianzon, along with the college GAD youth coordinators, organized a kick-off activity in consonance with the National Women’s Month at the Eastern Visayas State University Administration lobby, March 6 at 7:30 in the morning during the University’s Flag Raising Ceremony.

The dance presentation and giving of purple balloons to women present in the activity made a remarkable imprint on the hearts of the attendees.

Women’s Month in the Philippines is celebrated every March. Since 1988, Filipinos have dedicated the entire month in celebrating the achievements of the country’s women and raising awareness about domestic violence, sexism, and other hardships that women face daily.

The 2023 celebration marks a watershed moment in advancing women’s rights by introducing a new recurring theme from this year to 2028: WE for gender equality and inclusive society.

The theme inspires renewed advocacy efforts and builds on the gains made during the 2016-2022 theme. WE Make CHANGE Work for Women emphasizes the importance of compassionate and coordinated networks for gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE).

Aside from National Women’s Month, the university also observes the International Women’s Day, promulgated by the United Nations on March 8, 2023. It allows people worldwide to discuss civil and human rights and equality for women.

The Gender and Development Office plans to hold a Visual Art Making Contest and Digital Photography Contest on March 9, 2023, at the Gender and Development Office Lobby.

In addition, the exhibit opening will occur on March 21 at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon in the administration lobby.

This year’s official hashtag is #WEcanbeEquALL. The objectives of the said endeavor from 2023-2038 are the following:

-to inform and engage women and everyone to push for gender-responsive government programs and services that empower women to contribute to nation-building;

– to provide platforms to share good practices and address gaps, challenges, and commitments in pursuing gender and development (GAD);

– to inspire women and girls to empower themselves and take on leadership roles, opportunities, and benefits toward maximizing their full potential and enabling them to reap the fruits of gender equality;

-to promote a society that ensures inclusion, protection of fundamental freedoms, diversity, and social justice and in which every individual, each with rights and responsibilities, is capacitated and encouraged to take an active role to play.

With the activities mentioned, the university is indeed taking the initiative to contribute to a society that is inclusive and sensitive to the needs and demands of everyone.
