The Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), spearheaded by the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) project, strengthened its capacity for intellectual property (IP) protection and innovation through a Patent Mining Institutional Training for faculty researchers and innovators on September 15–16, 2026, at the EVSU ORIES Training Room.
Guiding participants through patent analytics and mining, Dr. Pearl Aphrodite B. Carnice, Project Lead of the IPTBM Operations and concurrent Director for External Affairs served as the workshop trainer. Prof. Mary Grace Aruta served as the facilitator and moderator of the two-day training. Faculty-innovators from schools and campuses engaged in hands-on exercises that allowed them to apply the concepts and techniques discussed during the sessions by documenting patent search results and preparing patent reports.
The workshop outputs were virtually critiqued by Engr. Jonelle H. Tablada, a faculty member of the Department of Electrical Engineering and a patent drafter from Southern Leyte State University. Engr. Tablada provided feedback and technical insights on the participants’ patent search results and documentation.
In his opening remarks, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES) Dr. Sheldon Ives G. Agaton expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasizing the need to strengthen the skills and competencies of faculty-researchers in intellectual property (IP) management.
VP Agaton noted that activities such as patent mining workshops enhance the professional capabilities of faculty-researchers and enable the university to identify, protect, and maximize the value of its intellectual assets.
Meanwhile, in his closing message, Director for Research Assoc. Prof. Bernard Niño Membrebe underscored the importance of strengthening the university’s institutional capacity in intellectual property and innovation through the IPTBM unit. He noted that EVSU is fortunate to have an IPTBM unit that supports faculty-researchers in translating their research outputs into commercially viable and y marketable innovations.
EVSU is one of the member universities in the Eastern Visayas region with IPTBM units under the DOST-RAISE Program.
Following the patent mining training, an IP Valuation Workshop is scheduled for September 22–23, 2026, continuing the university’s efforts to strengthen intellectual property management and support technology commercialization.
