News Serving Up Wellness; EVSU employees take to the Pickleball Court for Teachers’ Day

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — Stepping away from lesson plans, grading sheets, and administrative duties, faculty and staff members from Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) swapped their traditional workspace tools for paddles and plastic wiffle balls, coming together for an energetic session of pickleball as part of the university’s Teachers’ Day celebration and employee wellness initiative last October 5, 2026 at Divina’s Pool, San Jose Tacloban City. Designed to foster work-life balance, camaraderie, and active living, the wellness activity gave educators and staff members a much-needed venue to unwind and recharge.

Smashing Stress and Building Connection

Pickleball, which is one of the fastest-growing sports globally, proved to be an ideal highlight for the celebration due to its quick learning curve, inclusive nature, and high social engagement. Faculty members across various academic departments and administrative offices gathered at the court, pairing up for friendly doubles matches that featured spirited rallies, lighthearted competition, and plenty of shared laughter. The event focused on promoting physical health, team bonding, and stress relief, aligning with EVSU’s broader commitment to holistic workplace wellness and employee care.

“Teachers spend so much of their energy and time taking care of their students and managing the demands of the academic year,” noted one participating educator. “Taking time out for a sport like pickleball allows us to focus on our own physical and mental well-being, connect with colleagues from other departments, and just have fun together.”

A Comprehensive Approach to Employee Care

Integrating physical activity into Teachers’ Day reflects EVSU’s ongoing efforts to create a supportive and health-conscious work environment for its workforce. By engaging in fitness activities together, employees not only reap immediate health benefits—such as improved cardiovascular health, agility, and mental clarity—but also strengthen interpersonal bonds outside the classroom and office settings.

The Teachers’ Day pickleball initiative served as a vibrant reminder that behind every dedicated EVSU educator is a need for balance, recreation, and community support—qualities essential to sustaining passion and excellence in higher education.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 03: Good Health and Well-Being by encouraging active living and workplace mental health, and SDG 08: Decent Work and Economic Growth by cultivating a healthy, supportive, and worker-centric institutional environment.
